Mr. Regular wrecked his Echo yesterday. He's fine, but the Echo isn't. Here is his Eulogy for it.

It's a very sad, sad video.

He may need our help. I think he should start the Kickstarter campaign or something, because we can't have him fade out into oblivion.

UPDATE:

People are itching to donate in the comment section, like this guy, with the best YouTube comment I have ever seen.

If he joins a kickstarter campaign, I'll gladly donate to the cause.

with the front end fucked up like that, you would think that the airbags would of deployed.

it has to, he said it's a 2002

I believe all cars have to have air bags since about 1995.

sad for him, but one less echo on the roads..

Yes I hate echo's with a passion. My Ex had one, so I had one in my life for about 6 years. No one should suffer that long.

I just asked if we can paypal him at regularcars@gmail.com Frankly, I would have given him money just to get him out of a perfectly fine running Echo.

'94 and on, dual front airbags were mandatory in the U.S.

i didn't say i'd make it pretty. that would be a losing battle. but weld in some braces, get some lights, and hammer anything that might touch the tires out of the way.

i was going to do the same to the yaris i posted, but when she wrecked it into a stop sign (lols) the sign fell and bent the brace across the top of the windshield really totaling the car.

This might be a slightly callous reaction, but how much could collision coverage possibly be on an old Echo? I always thought the "liability-only" approach was used only in situations where you really could afford to lose the car.

I mean, the guy was driving an Echo, and he's from a pretty blue-collar area.

Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. It sucks, but that's the way it is.

I hate them too. I plowed through one in an '02 Silverado 1500HD. By through, I mean through... My bumper was 1/8 of an inch from touching the driver's headrest and every part of the car behind that headrest was shattered. I only had to replace the bumper chrome/headlights/hood/radiator.

The Silverado has been passed around since but the current owner who I saw last month told me he's still finding Echo bits in the Silverado.

Crazy as it seems you can hit something and depending on the rate of deceleration - as long as the under hood sensor is still functioning and in communication with the under dash sensor the airbags don't always go off. There is a peak G level and if the body is absorbing the impact and the plastic bumpers collapsing and falling off as long as the peak isn't reached the system doesn't set the bag off. It appears as if he hit a snow bank which might explain the situation as the object you hit comes into play. I owned an Echo and although I didn't crash it I can testify to how tough they are with the exception of some years manual gearboxes. I hit a deer once in a Suzuki Swift and the deer landed right on top of the front hood crushing the airbag front sensor and other then the hood, there would have been very little to repair... until both airbags went off and blew out my front window and the insurance company wrote off the car. If this guy's Echo has no frame damage and suspension is ok - it looks like he could put two quarter panels and a hood on it and maybe a rad support and he's good to go. My kid did in her MX3 like this once and I got all of the parts I needed at a local auto wrecker for under $300 and got it back on the road and it looked worse then this Echo. Might be a fun project if he's handy.
